I suppose people are getting back on MySpace due to the huge increase in popularity of online music streaming services, like Spotify. Its integration with Facebook did wonders for its paid subscription service. And MySpace has now opened itself up for social media integration, welcoming back man prodigal music fans.
The huge number of existing bands and music artists that had lain mostly dormant on MySpace are now back in focus - the bedrock of content is still there, waiting for the users to come back.

Great post, some interesting thoughts.

I agree that Blogs, Video and Audio are some of the great natural platforms which lend themselves nicely to "viral".

One issue which was not touched during the discussion but perhaps labelled as "emotion" or "spark" is that of "entertainment" - this is where viral games can be a good starting point?

I have set myself up a Chime.in account. It does look rather nice, seems to take the good aspects of Twitter and slightly... rework them. I've not investigated too much to say whether it's better or not, so 'rework' is probably the best way to describe it as on the face of it it essentially looks very similar. Then again, it's tough to differentiate between many social media platforms now.

I think the Want and Own buttons will be extremely useful for marketers and brands. Quite clearly they will be able to judge the demand for the product and its another tool to measure the buzz surrounding their latest release. The Own button, for me, gives users the chance to show off what they do own or prove that they are part of a particular group of people.

HTML5 is absolutely fantastic. One site for any screen resolution is a brilliant innovation and some of the results are great.

You can watch the social media debate here - it was a very interesting evening, the questions got quite heated! I'd thoroughly recommend watching this: http://socialmediamanchester.net/2011/09/08/smc_mcr-riots-and-social-media-debate/
